Which 2021 NFL Draft prospects should the Carolina Panthers avoid when it’s time for them to pick at No. 8 overall this spring?

The Carolina Panthers are eager to make some bold moves to speed up their rebuilding process this offseason. Their obvious desire to land a new quarterback is there for all to see, but plenty of other areas warrant some significant attention in the coming weeks.

If the Panthers can get recruitment right and add to a talented young roster, then a playoff push won’t be far behind. This will be easier said than done considering the lack of financial resources available. So it’s going to take some shrewd moves in free agency and another strong NFL Draft to get them in the postseason conversation.

Carolina’s 2020 class of college recruits was pleasing, to put it mildly. Cheap Derrick Brown Jersey and Cheap Jeremy Chinn Jersey are two studs on defense who were fantastic additions, Cheap Yetur Gross-Matos Jersey showed promise despite injuries, with the likes of Cheap Bravvion Roy Jersey and Cheap Stantley Thomas-Oliver Jersey also having the potential to become valuable pieces on the rotation.

New general manager Scott Fitterer built up a strong scouting reputation during his time with the Seattle Seahawks. Couple this with head coach Matt Rhule’s extensive knowledge of the college system and getting to see some top prospects first-hand coaching at the 2021 Senior Bowl, it is hard to envisage a situation where the Panthers draft poorly this spring.

Carolina Panthers might trade down from No. 8.
Trading down to acquire more selections if the top-three quarterbacks are off the board is a realistic option for Carolina and one that Fitterer will no doubt try to do at some stage over the weekend. But if they remain at No. 8, it could result in another hot young commodity arriving at the organization to give them a big boost.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at four prospects that the Panthers should avoid at No. 8 overall.

Prospect No. 1
Carolina Panthers
Christian Darrisaw – OT (Virginia Tech)
There is every chance that Christian Darrisaw will be a superb tackle at the next level. But unless the Carolina Panthers trade down in pursuit of more selections, then they should think twice about taking the Virginia Tech standout in the top-10.

Darrisaw has all the physical attributes needed to be a real success once he gets to the pros. However, this is an extremely deep draft class for offensive linemen.

Considering Fitterer’s ability to find gems in the later rounds, it could be reason enough to avoid taking a tackle unless Oregon phenom Penei Sewell somehow falls into their laps.

All signs point to Carolina taking a quarterback with their first-rounder if they cannot trade for a veteran beforehand, anyway. So players like Darrisaw could be way down their big board of potential options.

The Carolina Panthers head into the 2021 free agency period needing to make decisions on several key offensive free agents.

After three consecutive losing seasons, the Carolina Panthers head into the 2021 NFL‘s free agency period with several positions that need addressing. Before they can attack arguably the most significant offseason in the team’s history, the Panthers must address the numerous players on their roster who will be free agents once the 2021 season kicks off in March.

The 2021 offseason will be critical for the Panthers if they look to make headway in the NFC South
I don’t think anyone realistically thought the Carolina Panthers would be players in the NFC South. Among the three other teams, the Panthers are on the bottom looking up. However, that is a script that could soon flip on its head, as massive changes are on the division’s horizon.

The shifting tides of the NFC South
Matt Ryan could be in his final season with the Falcons. Drew Brees could very well retire this offseason. And Tom Brady has only the 2021 season remaining on his contract with Tampa Bay.

If the Panthers make the right moves, they can be poised to capitalize on the turmoil that will fall on the other teams. Whether it is 2022 or 2023, the Panthers could be sitting on top of this division.

Head coach Matt Rhule and offensive coordinator Joe Brady helped to inject new life into the offense. However, we have to watch for Brady to leave and become a head coach. He was already in meeting rooms for several coaching vacancies around the NFL.

They have an up and coming defense after spending every 2020 NFL Draft pick on the unit, including potential Defensive Rookie of the Year Cheap Jeremy Chinn Jersey. Carolina has the best running back in the NFL in Cheap Christian McCaffrey Jersey — the Panthers are a QB away from competing week in and week out.

How much cap space do the Carolina Panthers have in 2021?
According to Over the Cap, the Carolina Panthers come into the 2021 free agency period with $7.132 million on cap space.

This offseason will be an interesting one for new Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer. While he looks to make his mark on the team, he is hamstrung due to the salary cap reduction.

By playing most of the games without fans, the revenue took a massive hit due to no money coming in the gates every Sunday. Current estimations have the salary cap at $176 million, down $22.2 million from the previous season. The NFL and NFLPA agreed to a salary cap floor of $175 million.

The Panthers have to make decisions on several of their potential 2021 free agents
The 2020 offseason was dominated by the massive trade of DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals in what was arguably the worst trade imaginable. Well, there was a second one that was nearly as bad that no one mentions.

The Panthers’ shipping of Trai Turner looks ominous in hindsight
The trade involved the Panthers moving Trai Turner to the Chargers for Russell Okung.

Not only did the Panthers trade away Turner, a 26-year-old Pro Bowl guard, but they traded him for an older and more expensive player who was non-committal on retirement the year previous.

Okung is now 32, only played in seven games, and carried a $13 million cap hit. The trade alone forced the Panthers to eat $9.6 million in dead cap last season. Essentially, the Panthers paid $10 million and turned two seasons of a 26-year-old Pro Bowl guard into one season of a 30-something tackle who’s coming off a season in which he missed 10 games.

Having now played in only 13 games in the last two seasons, the Panthers need to cut bait and let him walk in free agency. Addressing the offensive line will be critical for the Panthers in both free agency and the draft, but Okung should be kept far away from those plans.

What will the Panthers do with two key offensive weapons possible leaving?
I don’t know if there was a more surprising performance than RB Mike Davis last season. First off, the fact anyone not named Christian McCaffrey in the backfield was odd enough, let alone someone who had the season he did. After taking over for the injured McCaffrey in Week 2, Mike Davis finished the year with 1,015 yards and 8 touchdowns from scrimmage.

He has already predicted himself that it will be a “free agency this year is about to be crazy.”

After inking McCaffrey to a four-year, $64 million deal, the Panthers might choose to bring back his touch count to keep him on the field, and Davis proved to be a great second option. The issue is he played so well that he is assuredly going to get several calls from teams trying to get the Panthers’ free agent to sign with them.

Can the Panthers keep from losing Curtis Samuel in 2021?
While they do have WRs Cheap D.J. Moore Jersey and Cheap Robby Anderson Jersey, Samuel showed his versatility in this offense. Even last year, before the season kicked off, OC Joe Brady said Samuel “fits the mold of what we’re looking for.” It took some time to figure out the role for him given the offseason, but once they did, Samuel was all over the field.

Samuel ended the season with 77 catches on 97 targets for 851 yards (career-high) and 3 touchdowns. He was utilized in the run game as well, carrying the ball 41 times for 200 yards and 2 additional touchdowns.

Now a free agent, Curtis Samuel overperformed the $1.2 million he received from the Panthers last season. According to Spotrac, he enters free agency with an estimated $12.4 million market value on a four-year, $49.96 million deal.

Given the cap constraints placed on the team by both the reduced salary cap and questionable decisions but the former management, the Panthers might be forced to lose Samuel in the 2021 free agency period.

The Panthers played the Chiefs down to the wire yesterday despite missing their most important defensive player: second-round pick Cheap Jeremy Chinn Jersey.

Here is a review of how the other rookies did on Sunday.

DB/LB Sam Franklin shines

The most impressive first-year performance this week came from the undrafted linebacker/safety Cheap Sam Franklin Jersey. With Chinn out, he stepped up and made some eye-catching stops. Watch Franklin sniff out a screen pass for Le’Veon Bell and shut it down with some help from Cheap Derrick Brown Jersey.

On the very next play, Franklin spied Patrick Mahomes and brought him down for a big loss.

Franklin finished the game with seven combined tackles, tied with Cheap Shaq Thompson Jersey for the team lead. This is turning out to be one of the team’s better under-the-radar pickups of the year.

DT Derrick Brown’s penalty problems continue

Brown has experienced the usual ups-and-downs that most NFL rookies do. At times he’s been explosive and disruptive, at others he’s been washed out or made mistakes that are natural for his level of experience. One theme that’s been running all along is his penalty problem. Brown was flagged twice in yesterday’s loss. Even though one of them was questionable, that brings his season total to seven penalties, tied for the second-most in the league. The coaching staff has to get Brown to cut these down eventually. His pressure rate remains strong, though and his stock is still up.

DE Cheap Yetur Gross-Matos Jersey and DT Cheap Bravvion Roy Jersey didn’t play much

The Panthers’ first second-round pick didn’t see much action. Gross-Matos was activated from the injured reserve list on Saturday along with Cheap Christian McCaffrey Jersey. He wound up playing just 13 defensive snaps, though – 21% of the team’s total. It was a similar story for sixth-rounder Bravvion Roy. While he was in the starting lineup, he was only on the field for 21 defensive snaps.

CB Cheap Troy Pride Jersey essentially demoted

Even at 80% with a lingering toe injury, Cheap Donte Jackson Jersey is still far better in coverage than Troy Pride Jr. at this point. Carolina has accepted that and it was reflected in their snap counts this week. Cheap Rasul Douglas Jersey  played every snap after being activated from the team’s COVID-19/reserve list and Jackson only missed two. Pride saw just 17 on defense. He is still involved on special teams, though. Douglas and Jackson both struggled awfully against Kansas City, too. Pride may yet get another opportunity to show improvement later this season.
